The fourth-place finish inevitably leaves some disappointment, especially after a match again decided by penalties. However, it cannot and should not erase the extraordinary journey our girls undertook. So says FIGC President Giovanni Malagò, commenting on Italy's penalty shootout defeat in the U20 Women's World Cup third-place playoff in Colombia.
This was a historic tournament for Italy, a result confirming the growth and quality of the Italian women's football movement. My thanks and pride go to all the girls, the staff, and everyone who worked daily for this outcome, Malagò added.
Coach Nicola Matteucci noted the saddest part is seeing the girls upset. He stated, "We deserved this final; we came to play it with great heart and competitiveness. We couldn't close it out in 90 minutes or 120, and then penalties become a lottery. This tournament showed the team's value and our players' caliber: they are reliable girls who never betray expectations, giving their all, not just technically but also humanly," the coach concluded.
